The Five of Us, Spring 2014

The Five of Us, Spring 2014

A History Lesson

I just watched this news/documentary done by a tv station in Baltimore, MD. Back in the early 1800's freed slaves from Maryland, USA colonized the shore of what is now Liberia. This clip (it's about 20 minutes long) tells the history and present, mostly focused on Maryland County, but also including Monrovia (Liberia's capitol, where the hospital and orphanage are). It's very well done and enlightening. I laughed at the antics of some of the children and from the joy of some of the people (there's a charming girl/woman walking down the road with a load on her head and she's dancing! delightful!), but I wept through most of it, overcome with a lot of different emotions.

It totally reminded me of what Bill Powers said in his book, Blue Clay People. The Liberians do not understand why they can know everything about us and America, but we know nothing about them and Liberia.

Enough talk. Go watch it. Here's their blurb and link:
A team of reporters from the State of Maryland, USA recently visited Maryland County in Liberia and produced a special documentary on Maryland County, Liberia. Talk To Me

I blog for myself and my kids and I would do it even if no one else cared, but I do like to hear from you (and think it's a wee bit creepy of you to voyeurize us without my knowing it). So, please leave a comment from time to time, or email me anytime at xawilsons@hotmail.com. Much obliged, I'm sure.
