The Five of Us, Spring 2014

Teach Me Lord, Teach Me Lord to Wait

When I was a little girl, my mother used to sing this song:

They that wait upon the Lord
Shall renew their strength
They shall mount up with wings as eagles
They shall run and not be weary
They shall walk and not faint
Teach me Lord, teach me Lord to wait.

It's obviously taken from Isaiah 40:31. God has been speaking to me richly out of this verse and it's context. The NIV translates verses 27-31 this way:
Why do you say, O Jacob,
and complain, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the Lord;
my cause is disregarded by my God"?
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
He give strength to the weary,
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
Will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
They will run and not grow weary,
They will walk and not faint.
(emphasis mine)
I like that this context emphasizes that God is still God and that because he doesn't grow weary, I needn't. It's all because of him--the everlasting God and Creator of the universe! I also realized some time ago that the word translated "wait" in other versions and my mom's song was rendered "hope in" in the NIV. Since God has been teaching me that waiting on him really is hoping and expecting him to fulfill his promises, this hit home. Today I was reading this passage in my "Greek and Hebrew Key" Bible and looked up that word in the lexical aid. Here's what it says:
6960. Qavah: to bind together (by twisting), to collect; to be gathered
together, to be joined, to meet; to lie in wait (for someone); to expect, to
await, to look for patiently, to wait, to hope, to be confident, to trust; to be
enduring (another kind of strength).
Isn't that powerful?! Using some of these words phrases, you could say:
But those who are bound together with the Lord shall renew their
strength.
But those who are entwined in the Lord shall renew their
strength.
But those joined with the Lord shall renew their strength.
But those who confidently expect, await, look for, hope for, trust in
the Lord
shall renew their strength.
Oh God, bind me to you! Entwine me in you! I cast off those things that hinder me from being entwined in you. I do confidently expect, await, and look for you. I know you are working and I expect to see the results. You are the everlasting One and the Creator of everything and everyone. I know you are bringing my babes home!
But those who endure shall renew their strength.

I grew up singing that song, too. It's been an inspiration and encouragement to me so many times in my life.

May God be with you!

Talk To Me

I blog for myself and my kids and I would do it even if no one else cared, but I do like to hear from you (and think it's a wee bit creepy of you to voyeurize us without my knowing it). So, please leave a comment from time to time, or email me anytime at xawilsons@hotmail.com. Much obliged, I'm sure.
