The Five of Us, Spring 2014
Penny
Yesterday, on the way home from school, Pea informed that I "needed" to write a letter to her teacher. The letter should declare her name to be "Penny" and tell the teacher, in no uncertain terms, that she should be called Penny all the time. Hee hee!
Pea and Punk recently watched the movie "Bolt" and really enjoyed it. For a week or so, they have been playing Bolt together. Punk is the super-hero dog Bolt and Pea is "his person," Penny. I've loved observing their active imaginations, but had no idea she was carrying this into school!
I talked to the teacher and there is time for pretending to be whomever you want to be, but there's a clear distinction when it's time to be called by your given name. The teacher believes Pea understands this, but wanted to press the boundary. So, Mrs. P (no, I'm not obsessed with the letter P--that really is her initial!) told her that she would need my consent to change her name. Instead of ending the matter, though, this fueled Pea's growing imagination and prompted her to request the letter! Hee hee!
It's such a pleasure to see these brain bits developing in my little girlie! Her imagination is blooming and she has enough reasoning and conversation skills now to communicate that she wanted the letter written. Praise God that He is overcoming the deficiencies of her early life! Sometimes it seems like we have a long, slow road ahead of us, but episodes like this show me that she is actually leaping and bounding toward wholeness--look out world!
